A total of 13,190 indigent senior citizens in Iloilo City have started receiving their social pension for the first and second quarters of the year.

Mayor Jose Espinosa III led the distribution of P3,000 each to 2,369 beneficiaries from Molo district at East Baluarte Gym July 17.
The recipients also include 2,191 senior citizens from City Proper to be given on July 18 at Veterans Gym; 1,471 from Mandurriao at Oñate Gym and 983 from Lapuz at Bo. Obrero Gym, both on July 19; 2,274 from La Paz on July 20 at Bo. Obrero Gym; 1,943 from Jaro on July 24 at Jaro Gym; and 1,959 on July 25 at Arevalo Gym.

The program is funded by the National Government through Department of Social Welfare and Development Region VI and City Social Welfare and Development Office.

“The elders in the society are the ones who need most attention and care. The government doesn’t want to see any of them suffering because of poverty. Growing old, they are becoming more prone to diseases and other health conditions. The amount given to them will be used for their medications, and healthcare needs,” Espinosa said.

Angelita Abiertas, 65, from Calumpang, Molo, said the amount will be spent for her daily needs.

“At my age, I am no longer capable of working to earn money. My children have their own families. I’ll use the money to buy food and medicine,” Abiertas added.

“I am very thankful for this help. I am going to share this with my grandchildren. I hope there will be more old people like us who can benefit from this program,” said Celia Derada, 64, from South San Jose, Molo. (Thessalonia Ordales/Iloilo City PIO)

As part of Department of Science and Technology (DOST) VI’s Grants-in-Aid (GIA) Project entitled “Enhancement of Coffee Production of Nagpana Minorities Association”, DOST in partnership with the Taytay sa Kauswagan, Inc. (TSKI) conducted a training on Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated Kiosk Stations (STARBOOKS) for Nagpana Primary School teachers in Sitio Nagpana, Brgy. Lipata, Barotac Viejo, Iloilo last July 4, 2018.

Availing STARBOOKS by the school paves way for an easier access to educational and scientific references that are essential for the cultivation of students’ knowledge and interests on certain topics and principles. The training was performed in order to orient the school staff and teachers on the creation and purpose of this project, its features, contents, access (admin-based and user-based) and local networking through a Wi-Fi router.

This project intends to make S&T information accessible and available to students specifically in the Yolanda-stricken areas. Moreover, recent updates include full educational and livelihood videos, DOST publications and library materials.

The latest version of STARBOOKS include changes and updates on report generation and submission, uploading of patches, updates on its site, sharing its server to the network.

DOST-STII is quickly moving forward by transforming its library into the first Philippine Science Digital Library. STARBOOKS is STII’s answer to the clamor of researchers to easier access to information, especially science and technology information. As part of its implementation, DOST-STII tapped non-government organizations to support its implementation.

Although the concept of digital libraries is not new, not all countries have completely transformed their libraries from traditional libraries, filled with endless rows of shelves of books and other materials, to digital libraries with endless rows of tables of computer units.

The resource speakers for the training were Ms. Mary Beth D. Grecia, SRS II of Iloilo PSTC - DOST VI who introduced STARBOOKS and its updates and Mr. Garry T. Balinon, SRS II of MIS-DOST VI who discussed networking and troubleshooting. (DOST6/JRAGabiota)

GT Town Center Pavia team really made it sure that most of the tenants are local. It will not compete with foreign brands to assure the public that they will get great finds and treats.

The 2-level mall has everything one needs: a supermarket, a department store, an appliance store, a medical and diagnostic center, fashion and jewelry stores, party needs, printing shops, restaurants and cafes, spa and salons, pharmacies, optical shops, and government services (SSS, LTO, NBI, etc). This makes it easier for shoppers from nearby towns and areas to actually just go and get items from the mall.

Trees around the mall's vicinity were not uprooted during the construction, in preparation for a park and open spaces which will be accessible to the public. Waste management and waste water treatments will also follow, making GT Town Center environment friendly.

SM Strata, the tallest building in the region located across SM City Iloilo, officially announces the opening of its multi-level parking spaces for private vehicles.

With a total area of 58,346.12 square meters, the 18-storey SM Strata tower is designed to accommodate BPO locators and offices on its 12 levels (7th to 18th floors). The 2nd to 5th floors are parking areas.

The project aims to provide job opportunities to the surrounding communities and to establish the BPO presence in neighboring towns where population is dense. The building is located at the Benigno Aquino Avenue, which serves as the city’s principal transport backbone. Thus, there will be ease of accessibility to public transportation for employees.

The building has a system that will minimize the threat of traffic build-up. Private vehicles may opt to drop their passengers at the front, main entrance or at the parking entrances on all four above-ground parking levels.

The SM Strata started construction last March 7, 2016 with an estimated project cost of more or less 2 billion pesos. The building is estimated to generate around 12,300 employees per shift not including tenants coming in at the ground floor.

The design of the building complements the existing mall across, SM City Iloilo, the only Supermall in Iloilo which expanded by adding a building within the property and highlights SM Strata as the tallest structure in the City.

The new SM Strata and commercial spaces will be able to offer employment prospects and will propel economic benefits to the communities.

Iloilo museum to highlight city's industries

Iloilo City Government is offering to collaborate with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) in maintaining the rehabilitated Elizalde building here that will be converted into a Museum of Economic History.

In an interview Friday, Iloilo City Mayor Jose Espinosa III said he broached the proposal to NHCP executive director Ludovico Badoy when they met in Singapore recently.

Badoy said they will tackle the offer during their board meeting.

“That is a big facility and they have no personnel to maintain it. We can be of help,” Espinosa said.

The Elizalde building is situated beside the Iloilo City Hall.

Espinosa said the commission wants to fill the ground floor of the building with artifacts representing past industries in Iloilo.

“Iloilo used to be the sugar industry. Iloilo industries have already the influence of Dutch, Spanish and British,” Espinosa said.

The mayor encouraged Ilonggos who still have photos of the old industries and the original owner of the Elizalde building to come forward and donate them to the museum.

Located at the back of the Museum of Economic History is the newly-renovated Kerr Building, once was owned by a British firm. It will be turned over to the city government next week.

Espinosa said a PHP16-million fund has been downloaded for the construction of a park in between the two heritage buildings.

Just a few steps away from the Kerr building will be the site of the new freedom grandstand. The old structure along JM Basa St. was demolished to pave way to the restoration of the Sunburst Park.

The Sunburst Park was named after an American Army Division that helped liberate Iloilo City and Panay from the Japanese occupation, Ilonggo historian Demy Sonza said.

The park leads to a heritage walk of the city’s Calle Real that was declared by the NHCP as a heritage zone. (By Perla Lena, PNA | Photo by Edgar Siscar)

Iloilo City veggies urban gardening starts

Iloilo City Government entered into a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with Department of Agriculture for Urban Gardening - Pagkain para sa Masa Program in a ceremony at the City Hall Penthouse July 23.

Mayor Jose Espinosa III and Atty. Hansel Didulo, DA Assistant Secretary for the Visayas signed the MOA.

Espinosa encouraged beneficiaries to maximize the assistance to be given to them starting July 25.

Iloilo City is the pilot project site in Western Visayas where DA will provide technical expertise, seeds, fertilizers, equipment, and garden tools.

The City Government will provide the venue, jetmatic pumps, and prizes for successful growers.

The initiative will showcase a contest involving the city's seven districts. It is intended to encourage recipients to engage into gardening, most specifically in producing their own vegetables.

The rationale is to teach the people on how to produce their own food, empower them to earn extra income from the product they will have and for them to have food safety.

“I am very happy of the notable partnership between the local and national government. In fact, all of us know that no matter how we say that there is industrialization in our country, we are still basically an agricultural country because our livelihood is still based on agriculture,” Espinosa said.

“With the help from the national government, it can only not give us good food but also we can be in our way to become self-sufficient in terms of food production,” he added.

Espinosa said Ilonggos should try to adapt or copy from other countries like Singapore and Israel because even if they are just small city states, they have urban gardening even on top of their buildings.

“Thank you President Duterte, for making and seeing to it that your people will have food security. We are very happy for this opportunity that we can provide food to our people,” Espinosa added.

Didulo said the President promised that it is his moral obligation to provide affordable and available food to the people.

“It is my wish that this will be sustainable even after the contest because our target for this program is for our people to be aware of what is urban gardening. The people should never stop planting with or without contest for I believe in the saying 'kung merong itinanim, may aanihin' (if you plant, you will have something to eat),” Didulo said. 70 streetkids get educational aid

A total of 70 street children from seven districts of Iloilo City were given educational assistance at City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) gym July 23.

The initiative was part of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) VI’s Comprehensive Program for Street Children, Street Families and Indigenous Peoples through CSWDO.

Mayor Jose Espinosa III led the distribution of P2,000 each to 16 beneficiaries from Molo district; 13 from City Proper; 12 from Lapuz and La Paz; 10 each from Arevalo and Mandurriao; and nine from Jaro.

Beneficiaries are in the elementary and high school level chosen from the barangays.

“We thank the DSWD for giving our children this assistance. We all know that every child has the right to education. Unfortunately, some families are not financially stable. Because of this initiative, you have no more reason not to study. This is your chance to work for brighter future. We are always here to support you,” Espinosa said.

CSWDO Focal Person for Children and Youth Merlyn Gison said the social workers and district coordinators closely monitor the performances of the children in school and community.

“It’s our primary duty to check if they have complied with at least 85% school attendance; and if there are some problems, we call the parent’s attention. Most importantly, we’re asking the cooperation of the parents or guardians. It’s their responsibility to take charge of their children,” Gison said.

“We also coordinate with Barangay Council for the Protection of Children (BCPC) to make sure that they no longer work, sleep or stay late in the streets,” she added.

One of the beneficiaries Jayhard Jotes, Grade 7 student from Brgy. Gustilo, La Paz, said the money will be spent for school projects.
“My parents are both working but their income is still not enough to support the needs of the family. Because of this program, I don’t have to ask money from them to pay for some projects in school,” Jotes said. (Thessalonia Ordales/Iloilo City PIO)

Envoys say Iloilo City clean, beautiful

Two ambassadors of first world countries visited Iloilo City and described the metropolis as safe and beautiful.

Ambassador of Kingdom of The Netherlands to the Philippines Maria Christina Theresia Derckx and Ambassador John T. Holmes of Canada paid a courtesy visit to Mayor Jose Espinosa III at City Hall July 20.

Derckx lauded how clean the city is and how friendly Ilonggos are.

“I have joined the city as ordinary citizen and I have experienced how easy it was to go around, how clean the city, how friendly the people are,” Derckx said, noting it was already her third time here.

Amazed by how clean the city is, especially the Iloilo River, Derckx said she would like to know more about Espinosa’s leadership.
“I also very much wanted to know the leadership of the city because I am very impressed by the way the city is run; what has happened to the river, how you have managed to clean everything up and make the river really an active part of the city. I understand that it is the longest walking way in the Philippines,” Derckx said.

Holmes also described the city as beautiful.

“As we drove through the streets of your city, all I could think of was 'katahum gid' (very beautiful). I am delighted and pleased to be here,” Holmes said.

It was his first time to visit the city.

He shared how working Filipinos helped the economy of Canada.

“I always say that it is a win-win situation for both of us because Filipinos are learning skills in Canada and they are sending money through remittances. But many of them after they lived, worked and saved money in Canada, they often come home here and are now investing in the Philippines, and I think that works well for both of our societies. We have need for the labor and you have the need for the capital and expertise, and so we will continue to partner and have our development,” Holmes added.

Derkcx assured that The Netherlands will help the City Government in addressing flooding problems, while Holmes said he will study what are the areas where Canada can be of help to the metropolis.

Espinosa expressed gratitude to the two ambassadors stating that Iloilo City and the two countries have made good relationship in the past.

“Canada and The Netherlands have been good to us as what history would tell, that is why we are greatly honored by your presence here,” Espinosa said.

The mayor noted he was impressed with the museums, festivals, and how people use bicycle in The Netherlands in going to their work during his visit there. (Merianne Grace Ereñeta/ Iloilo City PIO)

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) officially turned-over the ownership of heritage Ker and Co. Ltd. Building to Iloilo City Government July 24.

NHCP Executive Director Ludovico D. Badoy and Mayor Jose Espinosa III signed the Certificate of Transfer and Acceptance of the Historical Marker and Completed Restoration Project for Bahay Kalakal ng Ker and Co. Ltd.

Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon, Architect Reynaldo Lita, and British Chamber of Commerce Philippines (BCCP) Chairman Chris Nelson stood as witnesses.

“Thank you so much for this gift to the people of Iloilo City. We promise that we will take care of this property and we will use this to let future Ilonggos savor how magnificent was it to be an Ilonggo at the turn of the century, and to have a heritage building like this in our community,” Espinosa said.

The Ker and Co. Ltd. structure was an instrument of the progressive economy of the metropolis through strong trading during that time, he added.

Badoy also shared that Ker and Co. Ltd. was one of the foreign companies which established their office in Iloilo and opened business and trade here.

“One of the employees of Ker and Co. Ltd. was Nicholas Loney and he was the one who helped the farmers by bringing cheap and quality technology to help the farmers fast track the processing of sugarcane,” Badoy said.

Loney was the first British vice consul to Iloilo. The adjacent wharf Muelle was named after him.

Badoy noted one of the objectives of NHCP is to help and teach the local government units (LGUs) and institutions in the country to preserve historic buildings.

NHCP rehabilitated the bricks, floor, ceilings, and roof of Ker and Co. Ltd. building.

Meanwhile, Nelson said he was happy to be back and witness the turn-over ceremony. They were here for a trade mission last March.

“I think this historical building is an indication that the British were here before and had a very successful business relationship, and I think we can continue that in the 21st century. The historical marker is also a good indicator for the future,” Nelson said.

“I think British people should come to Iloilo and invest because there are a lot of opportunities here,” he added. (Merianne Grace Ereñeta/Iloilo City PIO)

Piolo Pascual, one of the country's sought after bachelor, knows all too well that relationships are built on promises: the promise to love, to care, to secure, to protect, and to provide.

Committed as he is to the promises he has made to his family as a son, a sibling, and a father,  he admitted that keeping those promises at times becomes a challenge especially when financial troubles arise.

“Like any other person, I want to give my family the best life possible. I am a man of my word, that’s why I work hard and seize every opportunity that comes my way,” Piolo said.

“But more than just earning money, it’s how you manage your finances that makes a difference. Fortunately, I have the guidance and help of one very special lady: my very own sister, Chiqui Pascual-Gonzales, who also happens to be my Sun Life Advisor.”

According to Piolo, Chiqui has been instrumental in ensuring that his dreams for his family will all come true. “It’s a partnership through and through. With her help, I’ve been able to make it all happen while still pursuing my own passions and advocacies,” he said.

Piolo and Chiqui’s story is but one of many in Sun Life Financial, where lifetime partnerships are developed and nurtured through the years. In fact, this has inspired Sun Life’s latest campaign, at the forefront of which is a new TV commercial highlighting Sun Life’s presence in a client’s life throughout the different stages of her life. It represents the many promises that Sun Life has helped bring into fruition for the past 123 years of its existence.

It is an honor for us to serve all our clients and help them secure their future and those of their loved ones” Sun Life Chief Marketing Officer Mylene Lopa said.

Ilonggo millennials urged to set money goals for a brighter life

Being a millennial is really an interesting stage of one's life. They are the ones who are enjoying their own money, but at the same time life events such as marriage, having a family, getting an illness, and even retirement starts to loom in the horizon.

They need to set financial goals now, so that they will eventually reap financial freedom and a brighter life ahead for themselves and their loved ones.

Helping them be financially prepared for the future is the main thrust of the literacy campaign of Sun Life Financial, which had a stop in Iloilo through an intimate talk with Ilonggo millennials held recently at Dova Brunch Cafe in Iloilo Business Park.

Dubbed as Let's Have Some Funds, the fun and educational program featured two millennials who gave away tips to their fellows in attendance about managing finances and investing for the future.

In her keynote address entitled Money Under 30, young entrepreneur and social media influencer Katrina Loring shared her struggles and successes in putting up and managing several businesses at an early age. Money mistakes such as zero savings, over spending, and credit use, something most millennials commit, were pointed out.

Loring dished out some of the lessons she learned: pay debts, pay bill on time, plan your budget, record your expenses, make savings automatic, and to prepare for rainy days and dreams.

"The art is not in making money, but in keeping it," she concluded.

Michael Gustilo, Visayas Regional Sales Manager of Sun Life Financial, Inc., highlighted the importance of setting financial goals in reaching one's dreams in his talk FUNding Your Life Goals.

"Having clear dreams and life goals will give you a compelling reason to save and invest rather than spend needlessly," he emphasized.

Gustilo also discussed some of the 'money regrets' of millennials such as excessive spending on wants, starting late on financial management and being dependent on salary as the only source of income.

He admitted having those mistakes early on, but a wise advice from a friend who is a Sun Life Financial Advisor helped him get out of the rut and being wise on handling finances.

"Sit down, evaluate your finances and spending habits, and identify opportunities or tools that will help you maximize for a bigger goal in the future," he recalled.

Sun Life Financial has been helping Filipino millennials embrace the brighter life through their financial literacy campaign and wide spectrum of products that include Life Insurance, Accidental Insurance, and Mutual Funds.

Millennials may avail of their insurance plans that's tailored based on one’s age, gender, and lifestyle. For investment options, Sun Life offers mutual funds products which can be had for an initial investment of only P5,000.

Sun Life financial advisors are not just product-pushers, hard-selling insurance policies down your throat. They are trained to give professional financial advice, to do financial planning before they even prescribe a product. They are professionals, having completed Sun Life Training Course and pass a licensure exam mandated by the Insurance Commission.

Sun Life Financial is the no. 1 insurance company in the Philippines for 7 straight years, serving Filipinos for over 123 years now.
