Over two hundred families who are survivors of typhoons Yolanda and Ruby in Sara, Iloilo now have permanent homes as Monsanto Philippines, Inc. and Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation, Inc. (GK) completed the Monsanto Village and officially turned over a total of 54 shelter units to selected beneficiaries.

Monsanto Philippines Country Lead Rachel Lomibao, together with GK Executive Director Jose Luis Oquiñena and key representatives from the Municipality of Sara led by Mayor-elect Ermelita Salcedo and Vice Mayor-elect Jesus Salcedo, led the official housing turnover of additional 24 units in Barangay Aldeguer, Sara, Iloilo.

Monsanto Philippines and Gawad Kalinga officially turned over the remaining housing units to identified family-beneficiaries in Sara, Iloilo. Present during the turn-over were (from left to right) GK Executive Director Jose Luis Oquinena, Vice Mayor of Sara Neptali Salcedo Jr., Vice Mayor-elect Jesus Salcedo, Monsanto-GK Village President Hadjie Balome, housing beneficiary Liza Lacival, housing beneficiary Josie Grapa, land owner Ruth Tirol Jarantilla, Monsanto Philippines Country Commercial Lead Rachel Lomibao, and Monsanto Philippine Corporate Engagement Lead Charina Garrido-Ocampo.

“Almost three years after the onslaught of Typhoon Yolanda, access to safe shelter and sustainable livelihoods remain a challenge among communities that were hardest hit by the calamity. As in any other recovery effort, we see it important to ensure that these communities have the solid foundation to start anew and the resilience to withstand future shocks from the environment,” Lomibao said.

The turnover was the second phase of the Monsanto-GK housing initiative in Iloilo. The first phase of the housing project, which comprised 30 core shelter units, was first completed last February 2015. There are now 54 completed housing units in the village, benefiting a total of 232 families.

According to GK Executive Director Luis Oquinena, each housing unit is disaster-resilient that can withstand strong winds of possible super typhoons in the future. The housing project is also a holistic approach towards development of the community’s overall well-being as it incorporates livelihood development programs and values formation training.

GK Scholars

Aside from providing homes for survivor families, Monsanto and GK will also support 30 scholars from Iloilo to be enrolled under the Gawad Kalinga School for Experiential Entrepreneurial Development (SEED) program.

"We are putting in funds that will support thirty scholars. These students are the brightest and the best students coming from very poor corn-farming families," said Lomibao.

"We will be also providing them a dormitory, built through the fund, which will serve as their home as they go through the program."

GK will be selecting the scholars who will be sent in SEED school in Bulacan.

She soared On the Wings of Love to fame as part of the Jadine love team, but on her own, young actress and singer Nadine Lustre has also become known for her great sense of style.

And she’s never over-the-top in her fashion choices, but likes things stylish, sophisticated, and sensible. Just like the girls next door she portrays.

As the brand ambassador for SM’s iconic Parisian brand, Nadine likes shoes that are “fun, flirty, and comfortable to keep up with my active lifestyle”. An affordable fashion advocate, she likes shoes that combine style and comfort as well as value for money.

Nadine’s shoe shopping advice for summer is to “look for something that makes you feel confident”. And she’s amazed at how Parisian’s “wide variety of shoes and bags” will certainly boost one’s style quotient. Here are her hot summer picks:

•Parisian Shoes in bright colored heels – orange, teal, mustard, and magenta – to sizzle up your look. Take your pick from strappy heels, sling backs and pumps. Block heels will also unlock fashion possibilities as they keep you grounded. Flat espadrilles in nautical and pastel shades will also keep your style shipshape this summer.

For Nadine, the three types of summer shoes every one should own are “ballet flats, sandals, and a good pair of wedges.” She particularly liked the gladiator styles and animal print strappy heels in Parisian’s summer collection.

•Parisian Bags with fun and functional pieces for today’s stylish young woman. There are small bags that make a big style impact, backpacks with edgy accents, as well as chic shoulder bags and classic handbags.

The Iloilo City Government is initiating the establishment of rehabilitation centers in barangays for drug dependents.

Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog noted the initiative will be implemented following the City Government’s recognition as the first local government unit which constructed detention facility at Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA-6) compound at Fort San Pedro in 2013, complementing the national government’s services.

He said City Hall got the help and expertise of Ilonggo psychiatrist Dr. Ruel Malata as the only one in the country who holds Master’s degree in addiction studies at King’s College London.

Mabilog who met with Malata Monday explained that his group of psychiatrist has already identified drug rehabilitation process.
“As per identification and classification, those with severe cases will be treated in hospitals of Department of Health. Meanwhile, those with mild to moderate cases will be admitted to our community-based drop-in centers in barangays,” he added.

The mayor said that barangays will be clustered per district to be served by the centers each manned by a psychologist, nurse, three peer facilitators and a utility worker who will undergo a two-week training.

The City Government will partner through a Memorandum of Agreement with senior citizens who are retired professionals to serve as peer facilitators because they are being looked up and listened to.

Mabilog stated the holistic approach will involve daily counseling on spiritual and psycho-social, weekly periodic random drug test and provision of vitamins B complex and C to treat patients for three to six months and a one-year after care follow-up.

The City Government is looking at a budget of P5-million to start the rehabilitation process of some 1,800 surrenderees here. [via Iloilo City Government Facebook]
